How to Collect Frequent Flyer Points on Your Credit Card
If your spending habits would work well for earning points on a frequent flyer credit card, you can start earning rewards right away. Simply use your card for purchases you would make anyway (petrol, food items, etc) and watch the points build. Pay off your balance before interest accrues, and continue spending with your frequent flyer credit card to keep earning points. To redeem Frequent Flyer points:
If your spending habits would work well for earning points on a frequent flyer credit card, you can start earning rewards right away. Simply use your card for purchases you would make anyway (petrol, food items, etc) and watch the points build. Pay off your balance before interest accrues, and continue spending with your frequent flyer credit card to keep earning points. To redeem Frequent Flyer points:
- First, select a Frequent Flyer credit card that meets your spending needs. Annual fees and interest rates on a Frequent Flyer card can negate the value of the poinmts you earn, so don’t spend if you don’t think you can pay off the balance before interest piles up. Look for a card you can use instead of cash for regular spending, not a card to use as a line of credit!
- Next, become a member. Having a membership in a Frequent Flyer program ensures that your points are credited to an account so you can redeem them later for a flight with Qantas. Don’t lose money on the deal by paying a membership fee – search for programs that give you a free membership when you apply for a linked credit card.
- Compare rewards programs on different Frequent Flyer credit cards – some will which will pay up to 2 or 2.5 points for each $1 spent, while others won’t have such a high rewards points program, but let you redeem points at any time, rather than insisting a certain number be reached before you can redeem them.
- Expect to increase your monthly credit card spend. Consumer group Choice revealed in a resent study that those most likely to benefit from credit card rewards programs were those who spend more than $2,000 a month. (The average Australian spends about $1,200 a month using a credit card.) Australians who spend less than $1,000 a month simply won’t earn enough points on a Frequent Flyer credit card to make it worthwhile after typical interest buildup and other fees, unless they are completely faithful about paying off their balance each month.
